Introduction
The village of Friockheim came into being in the early 19th century, when John Anderson, who later shortened his surname to Andson and who was Provost of Arbroath 1811-1814, obtained a feu charter of part of the lands of Friock from the then proprietor of the lands, Thomas Gardyne of Middleton. The name 'Friock' is possibly cognate with Gaelic 'fraoch', meaning 'heather'.
Andson's new village, originally called Friock Feus, included a spinning mill. In 1824, the name of the village was changed, by the addition of a somewhat incongruous German termination, to Friockheim, pronounced ['frikəm], with a short stressed vowel - approximately "freak 'em".
Friockheim lies almost entirely within the parish of Kirkden, but is partly in the parish of Kinnell. Information on topics not given on this page may be found on the pages for Kirkden and Kinnell. The parish of Inverkeilor lies east of the village, while Guthrie lies to the west.

Jan Burgerhuys younger (d. 1679 Middelburg), Michael Burgerhuys's son, also cast some ten bells for Scottish kirks in the period 1642-1671, including Hutton BEW (1661); Farnell ANS (1662) and Panbride ANS (1664).

Mural, formerly in the Free Kirk(?)
In remembrance of the Rev. JAMES NICOL, M.A. ordained at Clunie, Aberdeenshire 1872. Faithful and beloved minister of Friockheim Free Church from 1881, till his death 18. Nov. 1893. "Remember them who have spoken unto you the word of God." Heb. XIII. 7. Erected by the congregation.
Monuments in the older section of Friockheim Cemetery, which was opened about 1858, (12 stones) bearing pre-1855 information are listed in Alison Mitchell (ed.), "Pre-1855 Monumental Inscriptions in Angus, Vol. 1: Strathmore" (Edinburgh: Scottish Genealogy Soc., 1993), which can be bought from the Scottish Genealogy Society. (It's listed as "Angus MI - Vol. 1. Pre-1855 Strathmore" in their online shop.)
The older section of Friockheim Cemetery, at the centre of which stands Friockheim War Memorial, lies in the parish of Kinnell. It contains (as of 2 Oct 2012) 368 monuments and the bases of 2 further monuments.
The newer section of Friockheim Cemetery lies in the parish of Inverkeilor. This site does not yet list any monuments in the newer section of Friockheim Cemetery.
A partial listing for the older section of Friockheim Cemetery follows. [M1], etc., indicate Mitchell's numbering. Uncertain readings are in parentheses, (); parentheses on the stones are replaced here by braces, {}; square brackets enclose editorial comments.
Lair numbers
Lair numbers are given for some of the stones round the boundary. These begin NB, NEB, NWB, etc.
Photographs
Photographs of any of the inscriptions listed below will be supplied on request by e-mail, insofar as I judge it possible to obtain them. The photos will be 2304 pixels by 1728 pixels, and approx. 850 kilobytes in size, taken in good lighting to show the inscriptions rather than the whole monuments. Please be prepared for a considerable delay in sending photos.
[p1521], etc., indicates that I already have a photo of the monument; the links on this page are to photos reduced in size to 576 x 432 pixels.
