Parish churches

Liff Kirk

Above: Liff Parish Church

Liff Parish Church is located at National Grid ref. NO333328. Built in 1838. The bell, presumably taken from the previous kirk, bears the inscription [ref.]:

IAN BVRGERHVIS HEEFT MY GEGOTEN, '96

i.e., Jan Burgerhuis has cast me, 1596. Eeles, page 6 states the year as 1696, but that is impossible. See Jan sr. Burgerhuys [in Dutch], which states that "work by Jan Burgerhuys is known between the years 1598 and 1614" and "... known is about fifteen bells that he supplied to Scotland".

There are some slight remains of the preceding kirk in the kirkyard. The mediaeval church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was appropriated to the Abbey of Scone.

Only part of the west gable remains of Benvie Church, covered in ivy, at NO328314.

The remains of St Peter's Church, Invergowrie are at NO351301, with the burial vaults of the family of Mylne of Mylnefield and the family of Clayhills and Clayhills Henderson of Invergowrie.

Monumental inscriptions

Monuments in Liff Kirkyard (ca. 160 stones), Benvie Kirkyard (ca. 30 stones) and Invergowrie Kirkyard (ca. 90 stones) bearing pre-1855 information are listed in Alison Mitchell (ed.), "Pre-1855 Monumental Inscriptions in Angus, Vol. 3: Environs of Dundee" (Edinburgh: Scottish Genealogy Soc., 1996), which can be bought from the Scottish Genealogy Society. (It's listed as "Angus MI - Vol. 3. Pre-1855 Environs of Dundee" in their online shop.)

Arms of Scrimgeour, viscount of Dudhope

Above: on the roadside wall of Benvie kirkyard. Arms of James Scrymgeour, 2nd viscount of Dudhope (a lion rampant wielding a scimitar) impaled with those of his spouse, Lady Isabella Kerr (or Carr), daughter of Sir Robert Kerr of Cessford, 1st earl of Roxburghe (on a chevron, three mullets, and a unicorn's head erased in base). Initials to dexter: IVD; to sinister, ILC. Date: 1643, which was the year of James's succession to the title. (The metal plaque above is inaccurate.)

The following are some of the monumental inscriptions in Benvie Churchyard, several of which are short and uninformative. [M1], etc., indicate Mitchell's numbering. Uncertain readings are in parentheses, (); parentheses on the stones are replaced here by braces, {}; square brackets enclose editorial comments.
