Carmyllie parish church
(Known as the East Church, 1929-1943)
The parish church, built in 1609 and extended in 1836, was erected on the site of a chapel dedicated to the B.V.M. that had been founded by David Strachan of Carmyllie (husband of Janet Drummond) on 5 Mar 1500-1. The Strachans of Carmyllie were vassals of the Maules of Panmure.
A bell that had been intended as a gift to his native parish of Carmyllie from Duncan Fife, a Scots officer who had been in the service of Gustav II Adolf (Gustavus Adolphus), and Duncan's Swedish wife, is now in a bell tower beside Häverö Kirk near Stockholm. The bell is dated 1641 and was cast by Jurgen Putensen in Stockholm. It arrived at Häverö between 1731 and 1744, but it is unclear whether it had ever left Sweden, or is the same bell as hung at Carmyllie until 1715. The present bell at Carmyllie was cast in Edinburgh in 1716.

Sacred to the memory of the Revd PATRICK BRYCE, forty five years minister of this parish. A sincere Christian, a faithful pastor. Devout, charitable, and upright. He recommended that religion which he taught, by a peculiar mildness and simplicity of manner. Conscientious in the discharge of every relative duty, beloved, honored, and universally respected; he died, in the humble hope of a far nobler inheritance beyond the grave on the 21st of June 1816, in the 84th year of his age. Also of MARY AITKIN his wife, who closed a well spent life in the same hopes of a blessed immortality 19th September, 1801 æt 72. A tribute of love and respect from their only child, and affectionate daughter. |
Above, on west wall of the kirk: worn Ochterlony arms flanked by "MAO HM 1670" for Mr Alexander Ochterlony and Helen Mudie.
Further photos and details of the church are at Carmyllie Parish Church.

Monuments in Carmyllie Kirkyard bearing pre-1855 information (ca. 50 stones) are listed in Alison Mitchell (ed.), "Pre-1855 Monumental Inscriptions in Angus, Vol. 2: Seacoast" (Edinburgh: Scottish Genealogy Soc., 1996) [even though Carmyllie is not a coastal parish], which can be bought from the Scottish Genealogy Society. (It's listed as "Angus MI - Vol. 2. Pre-1855 Sea-coast" in their online shop.)
Andrew Jervise recorded some monuments at Carmyllie in his "Epitaphs & Inscriptions", vol. 1, pp. 246-9.
The modern cemetery is immediately west of the kirkyard.
A partial listing for the kirkyard follows. [M1], etc., indicate Mitchell's numbering. Uncertain readings are in parentheses, (); parentheses on the stones are replaced here by braces, {}; square brackets enclose editorial comments.
Photographs of any of the inscriptions listed below will be supplied on request by e-mail, insofar as I judge it possible to obtain them. The photos will be 2304 pixels by 1728 pixels, and approx. 850 kilobytes in size, taken in good lighting to show the inscriptions rather than the whole monuments. Please be prepared for a considerable delay in sending photos.
