Menmuir parish church

Located at National Grid ref. NO534643, at Kirkton of Menmuir. Built in 1842. The mediaeval church was dedicated to St Aidan.

Monumental inscriptions

Monuments in Menmuir Kirkyard bearing pre-1855 information (ca. 60 stones) are listed in Alison Mitchell (ed.), "Pre-1855 Monumental Inscriptions in Angus, Vol. 1: Strathmore" (Edinburgh: Scottish Genealogy Soc., 1993), which can be bought from the Scottish Genealogy Society. (It's listed as "Angus MI - Vol. 1. Pre-1855 Strathmore" in their online shop.)

Andrew Jervise recorded some monuments at Menmuir in his "Epitaphs & Inscriptions", vol. 2, pp. 335-42.

Erected by HELEN COCHRANE, in memory of her husband WILLIAM HUTCHESON, who died at Walsden on 10th October 1876; aged 77 years. Also of their daughter ANN, who died at Findowrie on 10th February 1871; aged 29 years. Also of the above HELEN COCHRANE who died on 23rd May 1891, aged 80 years. Also of their daughter JESSIE who died at Edzell 25th Feb. 1903, aged 65 years. ALEXANDER HUTCHESON died at Cotton of Balnamoon 11th Oct. 1929, aged 79. His wife JANE ESPLIN died at Walsden 13th June 1925 aged 69 Their son CHARLES ANDERSON HUTCHESON died at Walsden 2nd Sep. 1913 aged 17 years. Their great-grandson WILLIAM HUNTER died at Walsden 31st Dec. 1924, aged 3 months.

In loving memory of our father WILLIAM CLYNE died at Tigerton 25th April 1932 aged 84. Also our mother ISABELLA KEITH died 25th Jan. 1929, aged 78. Their son WILLIAM died 8th April 1952, aged 73.

In loving memory of my mother ISABELLA REID died 28th February 1944 and her husband ANDREW YOUNG late farmer West Muirside Menmuir, died 16th April 1946. Placed here by ETHEL R. WATSON.

In loving memory of KATHERINE LOUISA wife of WILLIAM ERSKINE SCOTT ERSKINE of Balhall daughter of General E. DANDRIDGE* Indian Army who died on 26th June 1925 aged 68. And of the above Capt. WILLIAM ERSKINE SCOTT ERSKINE late Royal Warwickshire Regt. who died on 20th Nov. 1934 aged 81.

James was the son of Andrew Knox of Keithick and Helen, dau. of James Carnegy of Balnamoon. James Knox married Margaret Arbuthnott of Findowrie. Mary Anne Jemima Carnegy-Arbuthnott married Arthur Risdon Capel (subsequently Capel-Carnegy-Arbuthnott). Wilmot Boys Carnegy-Arbuthnott was born Wilmot Boys Adams.
