Located at National Grid ref. NO518388, at Kirkton of Monikie. Rebuilt 1812. The mediaeval church, dedicated to St Andrew, was one of those that were appropriated to Arbroath Abbey.

Monuments in Monikie Kirkyard bearing pre-1855 information (ca. 120 stones) are listed in Alison Mitchell (ed.), "Pre-1855 Monumental Inscriptions in Angus, Vol. 3: Environs of Dundee" (Edinburgh: Scottish Genealogy Soc., 1996), which can be bought from the Scottish Genealogy Society. (It's listed as "Angus MI - Vol. 3. Pre-1855 Environs of Dundee" in their online shop.)

Monument at Kirkton of Monikie

Above: one of two stones built into the roadside wall at Kirkton of Monikie, possibly the pediment from above a window of a tower house; in relief: (B or F?)E 1587 (or 1578?) DL; Jervise, Land of the Lindsays ..., p. 386, interprets DL as David Lindsay - presumably DL of Kinnettles (or of Pitairlie), who held part of Monikie, and spouse, presumably, who may have been an otherwise unknown Barbara Erskine.

The following monuments are in Monikie churchyard. [M1], etc., indicate Mitchell's numbering. Uncertain readings are in parentheses, (); parentheses on the stones are replaced here by braces, {}; square brackets enclose editorial comments.

[M68; mural on south wall of kirk] Sacred to the memory of JAMES YEAMAN, of Affleck, late of His Majesty's 63rd Regiment, who died 28th August 1834, aged 47 years. And of JEAN MOLISON, his wife, who died 7th October 1873, aged 81 years.

[face 1] In memory of JAMES, son of DAVID SANDERSON, and his wife AGNES RIDDELL, who died 25th July 1875, aged 16 months. Also their son RICHARD, DICK, beloved husband of MARY LAIRD who was accidently killed at, Kingennie on 22nd September 1908 aged 30 years. Also of the above AGNES RIDDELL, who died 12th December 1908, aged 64 years. Also the said DAVID SANDERSON who died suddenly at Newbigging on the 11th April 1910 in his 63rd year. "In the midst of life we are in death." In loving memory of KATHLEEN W. S. RILEY beloved daughter of Dr and Mrs RILEY who died 12th Nov. 1915, aged 2 years and 10 months "There's a rest for little children."
[face 2] In memory of JAMES SANDERSON junr, Chief Engineer, who died on the Red Sea 23rd September 1876, aged 33 years. Also RICHARD SANDERSON, of the Australian Navy, drowned at Melbourne, 16th December 1877, aged 31 years. MARY DYCE KENNY, M.B.E., M.P.S., elder daughter of RICHARD and MARY SANDERSON, died in Malta on 24th May 1981. She served with distinction in the Metropolitan Police and for 25 years as a probation officer in Kenya. Dr. ANN RIDDELL SANDERSON, BSc. PhD. of Innervar, Monikie younger daughter of RICHARD and MARY SANDERSON died 8th April 2003 in her 98th year.

1872 Erected by JAMES LOWSON in memory of his father GEORGE LOWSON teacher Bankhead who died 27th Dec 1871 aged 60 Also, his mother, MARGARET KEY, LOWSON who died 31st July 1899, aged 81 years.
