Introduction

The Grahams, marquises of Montrose, took their title from Old Montrose in this parish, not the town of Montrose.

The lands of Dysart were formerly a detached portion of the parish of Brechin ANS, later of Maryton, but now form part of Lunan ANS.

As a warning not to believe anything on the web, no matter how prestigious the site hosting the information, the following used to be at "Paradox of Medieval Scotland 1093-1286" (at King's College, London):

Factoid Record: Inquest of land of 'Iniany' next to 'Falerikkum' (possibly Friockheim, ANG)

[This suggested identification of 'Falerikkum' with Friockheim is found already in G.W.S. Barrow (ed.), Regesta Regum Scottorum, vol. 2, p. 476 (Edinburgh University Press, 1971).]

'Iniany' is Ananie, a lost name in the parish of Maryton, adjacent to Fullerton [Andrew Jervise, Memorials of Angus & Mearns, vol. 1, p. 91]; it appears as 'Innyan' in the 1871 census of Maryton. The village of Friockheim, in the parish of Kirkden, was not so named until 1824. Whether 'Falerikkum' is Fullerton is uncertain, but 'Falerikkum' is definitely not Friockheim!

I'm pleased to see they have now corrected it, and it's now at Inquest of land of 'Iniany' next to 'Falerikkum'

The kirk of Maryton was granted to Arbroath Abbey by William the Lion ["[I have also given to them] the church of St Mary of Old Munros with the land of that church that in Scots is called `Abthen'"], but, by agreement with Brechin Cathedral dated 21 Oct 1304, ownership passed to the cathedral, to settle the difficulties that had arisen from its being within the diocese of Brechin yet owned by the abbey, which was in the diocese of St Andrews [Arbroath Lib., i, charters 1 and 244].

Monumental inscriptions

Monuments in Maryton Kirkyard bearing pre-1855 information (ca. 80 stones) are listed in Alison Mitchell (ed.), "Pre-1855 Monumental Inscriptions in Angus, Vol. 2: Seacoast" (Edinburgh: Scottish Genealogy Soc., 1996), which can be bought from the Scottish Genealogy Society. (It's listed as "Angus MI - Vol. 2. Pre-1855 Sea-coast" in their online shop.)

Andrew Jervise recorded some monuments at Maryton in his "Epitaphs & Inscriptions", vol. 1, pp. 235-8.

The following are some of the older monuments in Maryton kirkyard. [M1], etc., indicate Mitchell's numbering. Uncertain readings are in parentheses, (); parentheses on the stones are replaced here by braces, {}; square brackets enclose editorial comments.

Photographs of any of the inscriptions listed below will be supplied on request by e-mail, insofar as I judge it possible to obtain them. The photos will be 2304 pixels by 1728 pixels, and approx. 850 kilobytes in size, taken in good lighting to show the inscriptions rather than the whole monuments. Please be prepared for a considerable delay in sending photos.
