The relative frequency of first names in nineteenth century Scotland

This page provides some figures on the relative frequency of different given names among Scots. These figures demonstrate how few names were in common use. They also give some idea of how the frequency of names differed from county to county.

The information below is based on the 1881 census of Scotland. Southern Scotland here means the 13 counties of AYR, BEW, DFS, ELN, KKD, LKS, MLN, PEE, RFW, ROX, SEL, WLN, WIG.

[1] 'Donald' & 'Daniel' were probably regarded as being the same name in many cases.

The years in the headings are the years of birth, according to the 1881 census. Allowing for the small number of males in the earlier years, there is little perceptible change in the distribution of names over 50 years.

4. Percentages of females with any given name born in, and living in, East Lothian, by age

The years in the headings are the years of birth, according to the 1881 census.

'Mary Ann' is included in 'Mary', rather than 'Marion', somewhat arbitrarily. 'Jean' includes the newer spelling 'Jane'. 'Christian' includes the later spelling 'Christina'. 'Janet' includes its pet-form, 'Jessie'. 'Bessie', 'Betsy', 'Betty' are included under 'Elizabeth', though in some cases they are probably forms of 'Beatrice'. Elsewhere in Scottish records, the names 'Ann' and 'Agnes' are frequently confused, so this is probably also the case in the 1881 census.
